Back To School

It's back to school time which means it's time to get your kids thinking about school again! It's a tough adjustment from summer vacation to school mode, but I'm here to give you some tips on how to get your entire household ready for school stress-free.
Tip #1)Encourage the kids to get ready for school by themselves. Sit down with your kids and have everyone write out what they can do on their own the night before and in the morning to get ready. Things like, packing their lunch or getting their lunch money in their backpacks, making sure everything they need for school is in their backpack, picking out their school clothes, etc. It may be a good idea to write these things down and allow the kids to post them on their room door so they remember!
Tip #2) Buy a calendar that has large slots where you can write activities or a pre-printed white board calendar which is even better because they are easy to revise when necessary. This calendar will be where you track down all the school activities that will be going on; the days that the kids are out of school or get out early, doctor appointments, after school activities, etc. This calendar should be posted on your refrigerator, near a phone or somewhere everyone in the house can see it. This way everyone knows what's planned for the day!
Tip#3) Ease the family into a school year schedule. During the last week or so of summer, re-introduce a school year bedtime. Begin waking late sleepers earlier and earlier, until it gets near the time they will need to get up for school. Also don't neglect meal times! Your children need to adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it from them.
Tip #4) Check before you shop. August is the second-biggest sales month for clothing retailers. An informed shopper is a savvy shopper, so prepare before you shop. Take an afternoon and assess each child's clothing needs. Empty drawers and closets of outgrown or worn-out clothing, and donate the discards. For clothing that is outgrown see if it can be handed down to younger siblings. As for school supplies get a list from the school of what each child will need before you shop. This will help the family to avoid getting un-needed items and help stay on budget.
Tip #5) Take the stress out of…Oh no the kids get home in an hour. A new school year quickens the tempo of family life. Sports activities, music lessons, church programs and volunteer commitments tap parental time and put new mileage on the mini-van. Get organized!
  • Take a stab at speed cleaning and whip through household chores in record time.
  • Cut time in the kitchen: create a menu plan and never again wonder "What's for dinner?"
  • Try a session of freezer cooking and stock the freezer with precooked/prepared meals for stress-free dinners on sports nights.
Happy back to school! I hope these tips make this school and many more school years to come stress free, and a breeze!
