Fall is here and we all know what that means! It’s time to rake all those leaves that will be falling to the ground. Cleaning up your yard after all the fall leaves have fallen can be an overwhelming job. But it is important to rake, blow, mulch, or bag up your leaves once they fall. If you let them sit in your yard the lawn will be dead come Spring time. Here are some hints to making this job a little easier and maybe even a little more fun!
Things you’ll Need:
• rake
• yard waste bags
• mulcher (if you have one available)
First and most important, turn your favorite music on so your mind wonders away from all the leaves you see on the ground. This may take a while depending on how large your yard is but it's well worth the time!
• If you do not have a mulcher and plan to do all the raking by hand, do not bother raking leaves until most of the leaves have fallen from the trees (but before the snow hits of course!). If you try to 'keep up' with the leaves that are falling, you will only be tired and get nowhere fast.
• Pace yourself. If you are raking by hand, it is a great workout and can build upper body strength. With this in mind, do not work at this task for more than a couple hours at a time.
• To rake leaves the most effectively, start in the outer corner of your yard and either rake in a straight line or rake from the outer corner inward.
• Make several piles around the yard (don't try to rake all the leaves into one pile).
• Ideally, have another person hold the yard bag while you fill it.
• If you have the space, you can use your leaves to make compost. Simply rake your leaves over a vegetable garden bed or add to your compost barrel.
I hope these tips make raking your leafs this fall a little easier and a little more fun!
